Rethinking the correction for absorbing aerosols in the OMI- and TROPOMI-like surface UV algorithms

Abstract. Satellite estimates of surface UV irradiance have been available since 1978 from the TOMS spectrometer and continued with significantly improved ground resolution using Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI 2004–current) Sentinel 5 Precursor (S5P 2017–current). The retrieval algorithm remains essentially same: it first clear-sky based on measured ozone then accounts for attenuation by clouds aerosols, applying two consecutive correction factors. When estimating total aerosol effect in irradiance, there are major classes aerosols to be considered: (1) that only scatter radiation (2) both absorb radiation. former is implicitly included effective Lambertian-equivalent scene reflectivity (LER), so scattering influence estimated through cloud factor. Aerosols attenuate more strongly than non-absorbing same extinction optical depth.
